Things to do in Badachro

Badachro is a small village on the West Coast of Scotland near Gairloch. Locals from Gairloch collectively call all the small villages across the loch “The Overside”. Badachro makes for a perfect rest stop on the NC500 with many opportunities for adventure.

Here are some of the best things to so In Badachro or The Overside:

Fun sea kayaking in badachro

Gairloch Kayak Centre; We may be biased, but this is our personal favourite. We offer half day sea kayaking experiences in the sheltered waters around Loch Shieldaig and Badachro, always on the lookout for wildlife such as seals, otters, Sea eagles, urchin and starfish. We also offer full day guided kayak tours on Loch Maree, the fourth largest freshwater Loch in Scotland with the oppertunity to spot black throated divers and even Osprey and White tailed Eagles.

Shieldaig Falconry; Shieldaig Lodge Falconry is based in the same place as our kayak centre, Shieldaig Lodge Hotel. There are various different experiences you can book including falconry and archery with a fantastic array of birds that can be viewed.

Fairy Lochs Walk; The Fairy Lochs is a walk local to the Kayak Centre, taking you up to a small group of lochans surrounded by alternately rocky or boggy ground. The Fairy Lochs are also the site of a crashed World War Two bomber. The site is a registered war grave and visitors are asked not to disturb any remaining wreckage. Would you like a guide? CONTACT US and we can share the secrets, history and a little on the natural environment the bomber fatefully crashed into and you will guide you safely guided by one of our fully qualified guides.

Gairloch Trekking Centre; Fancy riding on some of the most gorgeous beaches in the area? With a selection of horses and ponies there is something suitable for everyone of all experience levels. The rides take place on Red Point beach, a beautiful red sand beach with views across to Torridon and Skye.

Lobster pots

● Shellfish Safaris; A unique experience, Shellfish Safaris run from Dry Island in Badachro harbour. This is a traditional working fishing boat, and the tours allow you to watch langoustine creels and lobster pots being pulled up from the depths, along with the potential to see many other marine species.

● Badachro Distillery; An independent gin, whiskey and vodka distillery, Badachro Distillery uses local botanicals at the heart of all their products. Tours of the distillery can be booked online and the shop is open Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm. A visit to any of these places will take you through some of the stunning scenery of Wester Ross, with a variety of local beaches to explore and many more hidden gems to be found along the way. This is only a short list of some of the great things to do in Badachro! Hungry after all that adventure? Why not grab a bite to eat?

Gin & Tonic

● Shieldaig Lodge Afternoon Tea; Bookings must be made at least 48 hours in advance for arguably the poshest afternoon tea you will experience. With a selection of sandwiches, cakes, scones and many different teas, there is something for everyone’s tastes. Non residents are welcome. The hotel also offers breakfast, light lunch and dinner options in their fine dining Loch-View restaurant, though bookings must be made in advance.
